Community Allowances

To offset the higher cost of living outside Whitehorse, all employees working in rural communities are entitled to a community allowance. The amount of money depends on several factors, including distance from the head office.

If an employee is in receipt of free room and board they are not entitled to the community allowance.

When is the community allowance paid?

  • Regular employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis
  • Part-time employees in each community receive a pro-rated community allowance
  • Auxiliary employees receive their outstanding community allowance shortly after March 31 and September 30 of each year or at the time of off-duty status
  • Seasonal auxiliaries are paid at the time of their temporary or permanent release
