Coaching History

Coaching Information

Coaching was first introduced in Yukon government in the fall of 2000. In response to an identified organizational need, the program was designed to support the participants in the Yukon Government Leadership Forum (YGLF).

Coaching support initially looked more like a mentoring program where senior managers were identified to provide the coaching support.

This first model did not work well for two reasons. The coaches: 1) were often too busy to meet with their colleagues and, 2) had varying conceptions about what coaching was or wasn’t.

After some extensive research, the Deputy Ministers Committee on Human Resources (DMHR) approved contracting Dr. William Bergquist to help frame the Government of Yukon’s coach training program.

Dr. Bergquist manages The Professional School of Psychology  in California. This graduate school includes a Center for Executive Coaching that offers a range of degree and certificate programs including certificate programs in coaching.

Employees who enter the Government of Yukon’s coach training program complete the equivalent of a certificate program in coaching.

Between the fall of 2001 and the spring of 2004, the Government of Yukon completed three coach training programs. These coach training programs are run in alternate years to the Yukon Government Leadership Forum (YGLF) in order to time the graduation of new coaches with the start of the next Yukon Government Leadership Forum.
