Career and Personal Development = Planning, Learning & Experiencing

We believe that career growth is the result of following three approaches - from planning your career . . . to learning more about yourself and your interests . . . to experiencing personal development and growth in your life situations.

Planning

Planning can help you explore your goals, achieve results, direct your energies and unleash your potential. The key to career planning is to remember that it is your plan which is based on your dreams, hopes and goals: you can change it and you choose how to achieve the results.

Consciously exploring your purpose, short and long term goals and the steps you will take to meet those goals, are first steps to achieving them.

To help you in planning, you can:

  • access the Career and Assessment Centre (667-5613)
  • use self-directed goal-setting tools
  • talk with your supervisor about integrating your career plans into your work plans
  • pursue opportunities to work with those in the career you aspire to reach (e.g. succession planning)

Learning

Learning is more than acquiring knowledge or skills. It also involves discovering more about yourself, your interests, your desire for challenge and in what role(s) you best fit.

Opportunities for learning are many, including:

  • in-class training (YG or Yukon College courses)
  • E-learning
  • project assignments
  • self-directed learning (attending conferences, classes, workshops, etc.)
  • professional technical training (tuition reimbursement)
  • networking, coaching and mentoring

Experiencing

There is nothing quite like putting your acquired skills into practice, integrating new personal insights into your life experience and noticing what happens as a result. An improved relationship, recognition from others for your contribution to the workplace, confidence in your abilities, awareness of a new goal to reach for…just makes you want to learn more!

There are many ways to put learning into action, including:

  • pursuing acting assignments, secondments, job rotations or temporary assignments
  • requesting developmental assignments
  • volunteering or community work
  • changing jobs
  • sharing your learning with peers and applying it to workplace processes

If you view learning as a life long journey, we invite you to take a look at the wide range of learning opportunities in this, and future issues of the Quarterly. We hope that the choices you find will offer you what you need on your career and personal development path.
