Pandemic Planning - Questions and Answers on Human Resources Issues

top

fluIntroduction

The H1N1 influenza virus is a respiratory illness that causes symptoms similar to those of the seasonal flu (fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, body aches, fatigue and loss of appetite). As with any influenza virus, staff who exhibit flu-like symptoms are expected to stay at home and practice self-care until the symptoms disappear.

If you have symptoms, you are expected to stay home, call 811 if you have questions about symptoms or treatment, and do not return to work until you have been without symptoms for at least 24 hours.  Staying away from the workplace while you have symptoms will help to keep the workplace healthy.

The current collective agreement provisions and GAM policies provide a human resource framework that meets the majority the employer’s needs during a flu pandemic. Where changes are required, they will be issued by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and, in the case of the collective agreements, only after consultation and agreement of the government unions.

These Questions and Answers, and related guidelines, may be amended or added to as the pandemic situation evolves.

It is difficult to determine to what degree the workplace might be affected by the H1N1 virus. The current operating rule is “business as usual” until circumstances determine otherwise. If circumstances develop that require supplementary provisions, they shall be announced by the Public Service Commissioner after consultation with and consent of the unions.
