Coaching

Coaching is a relatively new and exciting phenomenon in North America and the Government of Yukon.  Coaching supports leadership development in the Government of Yukon by helping support individuals when they are required to lead.  Coaching also creates the time and space where “moments of leadership” between coach and colleague occur.

Coaching is explored and used as a lever for both individual and organizational changes and effectiveness. Coaching was first introduced in GY in the fall of 2000. In response to an identified organizational need, this program was originally designed to support the participants in the Yukon Government Leadership Forum (YGLF).

Using an appreciative inquiry model, coaching in the Government of Yukon is comprised of two components: 1) a coach training program designed to develop the coaching skills in individuals (coaches); and 2) services for the people who have a need for coaching support (colleagues).

The Government of Yukon’s coaching program is structured along three themes in coaching:

Appreciative Coaching:

A coach works with individuals to help them become clear in their decision making; typically, the focus is more strategic, long term in nature and can touch on content that is varied and general in nature.

Performance Coaching:

A performance coach focuses the relationship with their colleague on work place behaviour; this focus is typically short term, more tactical and tends to be content specific, working with specific situations.

Alignment Coaching:

Alignment coaching is more foundational in its nature and works with values, attitudes and the congruence of these between those of a colleague and those of the organization. Alignment coaching can be very specific in nature.

Depending on the need(s) of the colleague, a coach may use one, all or a combination of these types of coaching.
