Retirement Planning: Lifestyle Issues

Retirement means different things to different people. While some people look forward to a life of leisure after working for many years, others look at "retirement" from their main career as an opportunity to work at something new, perhaps open a small business or work part-time in another field.

But the one thing that most of us will have in common is the freedom to choose. Being retired means that you get to call the shots – you can decide how late you’re going to sleep in, and what you’re going to do once you’re up and around! While that may sound very appealing, some people find it stressful. If you’ve spent most of your life following schedules set by others (job demands, family responsibilities), it can be a challenge to decide how you want to spend your time.

It’s important to give some thought to this challenge before you retire. After all, with people retiring earlier and living longer, many of us may be retired for 20 to 30 years. That’s a lot of time to fill!

The most successful retirees seem to be those who have developed a wide range of interests throughout their working lives. For them, retirement is often a continuation of their previous lifestyle, but with more emphasis on leisure activities and less on work. Those who have not taken the time to develop interests outside of work often have a more difficult transition to retirement.
