Community Allowances

To offset the higher cost of living outside Whitehorse, all employees working in rural communities are entitled to a community allowance. The amount of money depends on several factors, including distance from the head office. This amount is paid on a bi-weekly basis for regular employees. Part-time employees in each community receive a pro-rated community allowance. Auxiliary employees receive their outstanding community allowance shortly after March 31 and September 30 of each year or at the time of off-duty status, or for seasonal auxiliaries at the time of their temporary or permanent release.

If an employee is in receipt of free room and board they are not entitled to the community allowance.

The community allowance by community can be found in the applicable references listed below:

  • Yukon Employees’ Union – Article 38 in the YEU collective agreement
  • Yukon Teachers’ Association – Article 31 in the YTA collective agreement
  • Managers – Part 5 of Section “M”
  • Confidential Employees – as per Policy 3.8 of General Administration Manual,  refer to Article 38 in the YEU collective agreement.
